FAQs - FEES, INSURANCE, AND WHAT TO EXPECT:

$150 per 55-minute session.

If you might benefit from a longer session, let’s discuss.

I am primarily an out-of-network (OON) provider. I only accept a limited number of insurance plans and here’s why:

I believe that the length, approach and modality of treatment should be dictated by the needs of my clients and not by the expectations of insurance providers.

I believe in the sanctity of the therapeutic relationship and the confidentiality that exists between therapist and client. Insurance providers can request access to your therapy records, which does not honor the privacy of our relationship and the things you have shared in our sessions. You, not your insurance provider, should be the only person dictating who has access to this information.

In order to bill insurance I am required to submit a mental health diagnosis, even after the very first session! While a diagnosis can often be helpful and appropriate, as human beings we have many challenges that are not always so neatly packaged under the label of a single mental health disorder. I prefer to work for you, not your insurance provider.

Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges Under the No Surprises Act:
If you do not have or are not using insurance, you have the right to request and receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining in writing how much your treatment will cost at least one business day prior to your psychotherapy session.  For more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, please visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

I accept Aetna, Oxford, Oscar and United Healthcare commercial plans.

Many people also have out-of-network (OON) benefits through their insurance providers, which may allow for partial reimbursement for therapy appointments. If you have an FSA/HSA account, feel free to use this too.

If you are interested in utilizing OON benefits for therapy, I’ve put together a few questions for you to ask your provider before we get started:

  • Does my plan include “out-of-network” coverage for mental health?
  • Is there an annual deductible for out-of-network benefits? If so, how much?
  • How much of my yearly deductible have I already met?
  • Is there a limit on out-of-pocket expenses per year? How much?
  • What is the percentage for mental health services that my plan will cover after I have met the deductible?
  • When does my deductible start over?
  • Does my plan require preauthorization for psychotherapy? Do I need approval for certain CPT codes (i.e. 90834 or 90837)?
  • What is the 5-digit Payer ID for submitting electronic claims? If claims cannot be submitted electronically, what is the billing address for my specific insurance plan?

Please make sure to verify your OON benefits before beginning therapy. All clients will be expected to pay for appointments in full, regardless of insurance coverage/reimbursement.

First of all, it’s okay to be nervous! Whether you’ve been to therapy before or you haven’t seen a therapist for a long time, it’s normal to feel some anxiety around sharing your thoughts and feelings with a new person. Here is what you can expect:

I treat the first session as a getting-to-know-you session. I will invite you to share about yourself and your experiences, the challenges that brought you to therapy, and things that did or did not work well in past treatment.

We will also talk about your goals for therapy and decide on a good place to start our work together. I  might also dig a little deeper into some of the things that you shared with me during our free consultation, as well as what you are currently doing that is or is not working well to support your mental health.

If I ask you something that you are not yet ready to share, that’s okay too. I go at your pace.
